about

2000? 2001? 2002? I'm not feeling too forensic right now. This is a Franklin's Mint set from the legendary and sorely missed Tir Na Nog Irish pub, blasting zone & indoor blizzard in Union Square, Somerville, Massachusetts.

I was a deep operative in the Irish Trad pub, booze and shnozz scene in Boston and Somerville from 1996 - 2006, working as a bartender. As a result, Sunburned got asked to do every Wednesday night at the Burren in Davis Square, Trad out the front and us in the back room. They paid us $200 a night and it was free admission. It was great, but we had to figure out how to play songs to the public because the sets were so long, and people could get hostile when it was 100% freestyle.

We used that back room to host other bands too, Michael Hurley, Spires in Sunset Rise, Feathers, Suntanama, NNCK? and it was free to anyone so it was a lot of fun and we learned how to play to strangers who sometimes hated us...

The Burren shows were the reason why I started making the cdrs. People kept asking us if we had anything for sale so I took Rob's rough sketches (without asking) that he was working on for a future record and made the Jaybird and Wild Animal cdrs. Manhand was born at the Burren...

Franklin's Mint was born around this time too and Phil led us on his own songs, we learned a bunch of covers and did a lot of recording.

Tir Na Nog was the coolest, more musically exclusive, of the Irish music pubs and I've seen some jaw-dropping Irish trad fire music played in there. Robert, the owner, always liked us and he used to work with Sunburned Dave Bohill's Irish dad who owned a pub in Chelsea (I think). I think he knew Dave as a little kid and was psyched to see him in a band.

Sunburned played in Tir Na Nog once, which i know because I have the poster but I don't remember a minute of it. This Franklin's Mint set stands out to me becasue they gave us a Monday night which was important as the Friday Night for everyone in the bar trade so the place was full of hardcore music heads, professional drinkers, and bar workers.

This is my favorite set Franklin's Mint ever played and one of my personal favorite live shows i've ever been involved with. It was FUN, it was LOOSE, everyone sounds good together, gang vocals on every song, Betsy Nichols' amazing vocals, and the immaculate monster guitar playing of Tony Goddess of Papas Fritas. I thought I lost this cdr but I found one in the closet so here it is. It goes good very loud or with headphones..

P.S. Rob's banter on track 12 tells me this show is from 2005!!
